Every story that touches on sustainability and packaging immediately points to consumer behavior and reiterates that the next generation of consumers will demand less packaging.

Millennials have taken the lead as the generation that cares more about general sustainability and packaging sustainability than any other age demographic, according to Packaging Sustainability: A Changing Landscape from PMMI Business Intelligence, a division of PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies.

With Generation Z continuing to come of age and consuming goods for themselves, they have shown similar buying habits, voicing concern for recyclability, reduced product waste and reduced packaging waste. Together, they drive consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies to offer sustainable options, primarily by checking packaging labels for information about recycling and/or sustainability and putting the product back on the shelf if it doesn’t meet their standards. Displaying a willingness to put their money where their mouth is, coupled with the awareness it has raised among older generations, resulted in almost 60% of consumers saying they would pay more for eco-friendly packaging, according to PMMI’s report.

Giro Pack Inc., Atlanta, has introduced its lightest package in its lineup of welded bags in the U.S. and Canada.

The Dual Handle consists of the mesh bag and a handle. At 3 grams of plastic on average, it weighs less than half of most Giro Pack product offerings, according to a news release.

The Dual Handle was designed with sustainability in mind. It’s a mono-product and composed of 100% of HDPE no. 2, which improves its recyclability, according to the company.

The bag is suitable for citrus, avocados, onions, potatoes and more. It’s compatible with existing GirBaggers and Speedline GirBaggers.

English cucumbers that have been treated by Apeel Science’s shelf life technology to replace plastic wrap, are now available at Walmart stores.

The cucumbers, grown and marketed by greenhouse growers Houweling’s Group, are able to maintain freshness, firmness and color without the tradition single-use plastic wrap on English cucumbers, according to a news release.

Walmart is among the first retailers to pilot the plastic-free cucumbers. Other retailers carry the product; the company “is not at liberty” to name retailers at this time, according to a spokeswoman.

“From the first time we reviewed the potential of plastic-free cucumbers, we saw the opportunity and the challenge of bringing avante garde technology to market,” Kevin Doran, Houweling’s Group president and CEO, said in the release. “From a high level, the opportunity to lead a disruption in this category and improve our decorated sustainability profile put us on course to where we are today.”

For every 100,000 cases of the Apeel cucumbers sold, it eliminates the equivalent of 164,000 plastic water bottles, according to the release. Houweling's will be cutting more than 60,000 pounds from its supply chain every year through the process.

Loop, the worldwide circular-shopping platform rolled out last year by Trenton, New Jersey-based TerraCycle, is now available in every ZIP code in the 48 contiguous states. Since its launch in the northeastern United States and Paris, with subsequent expansion to the United Kingdom this past July, Loop has experienced considerable growth of its brand partners and product assortment: It now offers more than 80 brands and 400 products globally, and more than 100,000 people enrolled to receive the service.

Loop allows consumers to shop for brands in sturdy packaging that’s reused until the end of its life, resulting in a circular system that aims to supplant disposable single-use packaging. The service features international companies such as Unilever and Nature’s Path and small independently owned businesses alike.

GIro Pack Inc. is rethinking plastic in terms reducing it, and optimizing its use in each package it manufactures to reduce overall environmental effects.

The company already offers reduced plastic options through its Standard and Light programs, which highlight the recyclability and ratio of product to packaging used (Standard) and lighter/reduced material in packaging (Light).

The company also offers 100% compostable mesh bags and labels.

“The demand and request for more sustainable packaging is off the charts throughout the industry,” Nate Fudge, West Coast sales representative, said in a news release. “ … Most of our clients and partners are moving towards reducing the plastic in their packaging, which provides a savings in packaging costs, and satisfies many market initiatives to reduce plastics.”

Other initiatives include direct printing on packages to reduce use of adhesive labels, and mono-product packaging.

“The topic of ‘sustainability’ is a complex one and there’s no shortage of offerings everywhere you turn,” Chris Alvarez, national sales manager, said in the release. “It makes it difficult when making changes or when designing a new package.”

There are pros and cons with all packaging, Alvarez said, including Giro Pack products. That packaging, however, serves many functions, especially for produce.

The Plant Based Products Council, whose members include companies that promote sustainable packaging, has joined the U.S. Plastics Pact, which seeks a circular economy for plastics by 2025.

Members of the U.S. Pact “recognize that significant, systemwide change is imperative” to achieve its goal, according to a news release. The group brings together more than 70 brands, retailers, non-governmental organizations and governmental agencies to rethink products, packaging and business models, according to a news release.

“Plant-based packaging materials offer a wide range of opportunities for addressing the environmental challenges we face today,” Jessica Bowman, Plant Based Products Council executive director, said in the release. “The PBPC is proud to join fellow collaborators of the U.S. Plastics Pact in working with stakeholders across the plant-based value chain to guide the global economy to a more sustainable future through the application of circular economy principles.”

As a founding “activator” of the U.S. Plastics Pact, the council agrees to:

Identify packaging that is “problematic or unnecessary” by 2021, and work to eliminate it by 2025; Have all plastic packaging be 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025; Undertake actions to effectively recycle or compost half of plastic packaging by 2025; and Make the average recycled content or responsibly sourced bio-based content in plastic packaging be 30%.
